OSHA Lead Awareness Course

Initial Certification Course

Our Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Initial Certification Course is essential for anyone involved in renovation, repair, and painting activities in homes built before 1978 or child-occupied facilities. This course provides the minimum certification required to work on residential rehab programs for publicly funded jobs.

Course Overview

Purpose: Ensure compliance with lead safety regulations and minimize lead exposure risks during renovation activities.

Target Audience: Individuals performing renovations, repairs, and painting in pre-1978 homes or child-occupied facilities.

Course Topics:

  • Characteristics and uses of lead-based paint
  • Health effects of lead exposure on adults and children
  • Lead-safe work practices to minimize contaminated dust
  • Absence-of-lead assessments
  • Cleanup procedures and post-renovation cleaning verification
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Training of non-certified workers
  • Required compliance documentation

Certification:

Successful completion of the course and exam certifies the attendee as an EPA Certified Renovator.
Certification must be renewed every 5 years.

Important Note:
As per the Michigan Lead Abatement Act, contractors and their employees engaged in controlling lead hazards in target housing and child-occupied facilities must first become licensed lead abatement workers or supervisors and work for a licensed lead abatement contractor. Certifications must be renewed every 3 years, and while required applications are provided during the course, fees and third-party (State) licensing exams are not included.
