Refresher Certification Course

The Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Refresher Course is a half-day training designed to update contractors on the latest lead-based paint information, ensuring continued compliance with Federal EPA regulations. This course is essential for those performing renovations, repairs, and painting activities in houses built before 1978 or child-occupied facilities.

Course Overview

Purpose: Provide updated lead safety information and reinforce lead-safe work practices.

Target Audience: Contractors and workers involved in renovations, repairs, and painting in pre-1978 homes or child-occupied facilities.

Course Topics:

  • Changes in interpretation and enforcement of lead regulations
  • New data on health effects of lead exposure in children and adults
  • Required lead-safe work practices during renovations
  • Use of EPA-approved chemical test kits
  • Proper lead-safe cleaning procedures and post-renovation cleaning verification
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Training of non-certified workers
  • Required compliance documentation

Certification:

The course includes a required exam.
Successful completion renews the attendee’s certification as a Certified Renovator for 5 years.

Important Note:
As per the Michigan Lead Abatement Act, contractors and their employees engaged in controlling lead hazards in target housing and child-occupied facilities must first become licensed lead abatement workers or supervisors and work for a licensed lead abatement contractor. Certifications must be renewed every 3 years, and while required applications are provided during the course, fees and third-party (State) licensing exams are not included.
