Initial Certification Course

The Asbestos Project Designer Initial Course is an EPA/State of Michigan accredited training required for individuals who plan and design asbestos response actions in public and private primary and secondary school buildings. This three-day course is mandated by federal law for performing Asbestos Project Design work within the State of Michigan.

Course Overview

Course Topics:

  • Using building drawings and data to design abatement projects
  • Meeting and planning with building owners
  • Designing usage patterns during abatement activities
  • Specification writing for asbestos abatement projects
  • Overcoming challenges posed by various response actions
  • Legal liabilities and industry insurance requirements

Certification Details:

  • Upon completion of this course, attendees must submit their certificate and fees to the State of Michigan to obtain state certification as Asbestos Project Designers.
  • To become accredited as a Project Designer, applicants must document:
    • At least two years of experience in asbestos-related work (25%), or
    • At least five years of experience in school building operations and maintenance
  • Certification must be renewed annually.

Important Note:
Federal EPA regulations require that any individual who designs response actions for asbestos hazards in school buildings (K-12) must first obtain accreditation as a licensed asbestos project designer. While required applications and exams are provided during the training course, fees for licensing are not included in the course cost.
