Initial Certification Course
Course Overview
Course Topics:
- Surveying and identifying asbestos materials
- Assessing the condition of asbestos materials
- Collection of bulk samples for laboratory analysis
- Understanding the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requirements
- Complying with the EPA Asbestos Model Accreditation Plan
- OSHA regulations on Presumed Asbestos-Containing Material (PACM) in buildings constructed before 1981
- Identifying asbestos-containing materials in construction areas through due diligence
This course meets AHERA and ASHARA accreditation requirements for asbestos work in K-12 schools, as well as in public and commercial buildings. It includes lectures, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations, preparing participants to apply their knowledge immediately in the field.
Certification Details:
- An Asbestos Inspector must possess a valid Inspector certificate and have a copy of their certificate with them at all times while working on a project.
- Upon completion, participants receive certification that qualifies them to perform asbestos inspections.
Important Note:
Your state has detailed education, experience, and application processing requirements for licensing in the asbestos field. Most states administer their own asbestos programs, and each state’s Department of Environmental Protection/Health is generally the best place to start with questions about requirements and training. Students are responsible for verifying these requirements prior to registering for the course.
