When Routine PLM May Not Be Enough
Gravimetric reduction removes portions of the sample matrix that can obscure asbestos fibers. This provides the analyst with a clearer view of the remaining material and supports more detailed asbestos identification and quantification.

How Gravimetric Reduction Works
Gravimetric matrix reduction is a preparation process used to reduce materials that interfere with asbestos analysis. The exact process depends on the composition and condition of the submitted sample.
The Reduction and Analysis Process
- Initial examination: The sample is inspected and its material composition is evaluated.
- Original weight: The portion selected for analysis is weighed before reduction.
- Controlled ashing: Organic components such as cellulose or vinyl may be reduced through controlled heating.
- Acid treatment: Certain acid-soluble materials, such as gypsum or calcite, may be reduced through an acid-dissolution process.
- Residue examination: The remaining inorganic material is prepared and examined microscopically.
- Calculation and reporting: Weight measurements and microscopic observations are used to calculate results in relation to the original sample.
