McLaren Hospital Legionella Investigation
Scope of Work :
McLaren Health Care Systems retained ETC to conduct Legionella sampling and water system investigations throughout its Flint hospital complex. The project was initiated in response to an increase in reported Legionella cases and focused on identifying potential sources within the facility’s water system.
The investigation included multiple rounds of sampling, data analysis, and coordination with the hospital’s response team to better understand water system conditions and support mitigation efforts.
ETC's Role :
Between November 2014 and August 2015, ETC conducted twelve rounds of Legionella testing throughout the hospital complex. Sampling locations were selected in coordination with facility personnel and the response team as new information became available throughout the investigation.
ETC maintained comparative sampling records and tracked results over time to help identify trends and evaluate the effectiveness of corrective actions, including system disinfection and water treatment measures. The data collected during the project provided decision-makers with a clearer understanding of where additional investigation or response efforts were needed.
Throughout the project, ETC worked closely with hospital personnel, providing technical support and ongoing communication as sampling strategies evolved and mitigation efforts were implemented.
Results and Impact :
The testing program provided McLaren Health Care Systems with critical information regarding water system conditions during a period of heightened concern about Legionella within the region. Repeated sampling and trend analysis helped guide response efforts and supported informed decision-making throughout the investigation.
By maintaining a structured testing program and documenting results over time, ETC helped the hospital evaluate potential sources, assess mitigation measures, and maintain a defensible record of investigation activities.
