Mill Street Ambient Air Monitoring
Scope of Work :
The City of Ecorse partnered with ETC to provide environmental oversight and ambient air monitoring during remediation and cleanup activities at the former Michigan Steel Plant site. The project focused on monitoring potential airborne contaminants, documenting remediation activities, and helping ensure work was completed safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Performed continuous ambient air monitoring at six locations surrounding the remediation site.
- Monitored for PM2.5, PM10, asbestos fibers, and hazardous metals including lead, cadmium, manganese, chromium, iron, and vanadium.
- Utilized high-volume asbestos samplers, aerosol concentration monitors, and SPM samplers throughout the project.
- Conducted daily site inspections and air quality monitoring during remediation activities.
- Tracked and documented truck traffic and contaminated material manifests leaving the site.
- Provided environmental oversight support throughout the six-month remediation effort.
- Prepared final project documentation summarizing monitoring activities, findings, and recommendations.
ETC's Role :
Project Details
ETC was contracted by the City of Ecorse, through AEW, to provide environmental monitoring and project oversight during remediation activities at the former Michigan Steel Plant property. The work involved supporting a large-scale cleanup effort while helping protect nearby residents, workers, and surrounding properties from potential off-site impacts.
Throughout the six-month project, ETC conducted continuous ambient air monitoring at multiple locations surrounding the site. Monitoring included particulate matter, asbestos fibers, and hazardous metals commonly associated with historical industrial operations. Advanced monitoring equipment was used to collect reliable data and document site conditions throughout remediation activities.
ETC also performed daily site inspections and oversight activities to help verify that contaminants disturbed during remediation remained controlled within the work area. Truck traffic and material handling activities were documented to support proper transportation and disposal of contaminated materials.
At the conclusion of the project, ETC prepared comprehensive reporting documenting site activities, monitoring results, and overall project observations. The final documentation provided the City of Ecorse with a clear record of remediation support activities and environmental monitoring performed throughout the cleanup effort.
Client Relationship
ETC has worked with the City of Ecorse for more than 10 years, providing support for asbestos, lead, mold, and ambient air quality projects across the community.
Results and Impact :
Continuous air monitoring and daily oversight helped support safe remediation activities throughout the cleanup process. Monitoring data confirmed that contaminants generated during remediation activities remained controlled within the project area, helping reduce concerns about off-site migration and community exposure.
The project also provided the City of Ecorse with detailed environmental documentation and monitoring records that supported regulatory compliance and long-term project tracking. By maintaining consistent oversight throughout the remediation effort, ETC helped the project team address environmental concerns proactively as work progressed.
This project reflects ETC’s experience supporting municipalities and redevelopment teams with environmental oversight during complex remediation and cleanup activities at legacy industrial sites.
