OVERVIEW AT A GLANCE
The Organization
The Problem
Many ARNG armories, especially those with historical firing ranges, have been exposed to lead contamination. Over time, as these facilities age and repurpose, ensuring the safety and health of the staff, families, and visitors becomes paramount.
The Solution
Regular environmental assessments, like the one conducted by ETC, are crucial for maintaining compliance with health and safety standards, and for protecting against potential lead exposure risks inherent in these historical military facilities.
Scope of work
Environmental Testing & Consulting (ETC) is working with the Army National Guard (ARNG) on a comprehensive project to assess and mitigate lead exposure risks in armories across the Western and Southeastern United States. This project addresses lead hazards related to historical firing ranges and general lead paint in these facilities. Our work involves detailed lead assessments, compliance evaluations, and development of abatement plans to meet Department of Defense safety standards.
Additionally, ETC is providing ongoing guidance to ARNG teams to support safe practices and sustain compliance. By ensuring these facilities adhere to strict safety benchmarks, this project plays a key role in protecting the health of personnel and visitors and preserving the operational readiness of the ARNG.
ETC's Role:
ETC conducted lead dust sampling in ARNG armories to assess and confirm safety at historically contaminated sites. This work involved close collaboration with state representatives, sampling at various armory locations, analyzing lead levels, and comparing results with ARNG hazard standards. ETC also identified and reported discrepancies between ARNG records and actual site conditions. This methodical approach was essential for verifying the cleanliness and safety of the armories for ARNG staff and their families.
Results and Impact
ETC’s partnership with the ARNG has strengthened compliance with federal lead safety standards across its facilities. By conducting thorough lead testing and providing clear recommendations, this work supports the ARNG in maintaining safer environments for its personnel and visitors, reinforcing the Guard's commitment to health and readiness.
