*Please note that ETL defines a “layer” as either a manufactured sub-section of a bulk building
material or a loosely associated surfacing component. Therefore, “layers” typically include:
backing materials (fiber, paper, etc.), skim coating, and textured coatings. ETL defines
individual “samples” as distinct materials that are not manufactured together, or materials that
must be adhered to each other during installation. Typical “sample” materials include, but
are not limited to: flooring layers and mastics; glue pods, ceiling tiles, and associated surfacing
materials; drywall system components (drywall, tape, mud); visually distinct plasters.
